Car Seat Safety

  • Newborns need to ride in a rear-facing car seat from the moment they leave and take their first ride home from the hospital and every ride afterwards.
  • We want to be sure you know how to safely place your baby in the car seat and that you have enough time to practice and ask questions, as well.
  • BMC’s Division of Trauma Surgery as well as the Department of Public Safety Office provide free child safety seat installation and inspection. They can assist with demonstrating how to secure children in their seats correctly and how to correctly install seats in the car. Call the public safety supervisor at 617.414.4444 to make an appointment to schedule a car seat installation at BMC.

Car Seat Q&A

Why do I need a car seat?

Massachusetts state law requires all newborns to have a rear-facing car seat. At BMC, we want to be sure you know how to safely place your baby in the car seat and that you have enough time to practice and ask questions, as well.

When should I bring my car seat to BMC?

Add “car seat” to your hospital checklist and bring it to BMC when you come to deliver your baby. You may also have a loved one bring a car seat to you during your stay at BMC at least one day before your planned discharge date. Our goal is that you will be ready to leave by 11:00 AM.

What kind of car seat will I need for my newborn baby?

Newborn babies need to sit in a rear-facing car seat specifically designed for infants. There are many models that have been tested for safety and can be purchased in stores and online.

I don’t have a car or will take public transportation home, do I still need a car seat?

Yes. BMC requires all newborns to have a rear-facing car seat prior to going home, even if his/her parents do not own a car. Most car seats can clip into a stroller that is easy to use for walks and taking public transportation.

Where can I get a car seat?

• Baby Registry: If you have a baby registry, consider adding the correct car seat as a gift option.

• Menino Gift Shop: For your convenience, car seats are available for purchase in BMC’s gift shop. The gift shop is located in the Menino Pavilion on the first floor.

• Second Hand: This is an affordable option for many families. Make sure the seat has never been involved in a severe crash, is less than six years old, has no recalls, has all the necessary parts, including a base, and comes with the instruction manual.

• Insurance provider: Check with your insurance provider, as some provide car seat resources.
